What do I need to know about Massage Therapy?

massage1Massage is one of the oldest, simplest forms of therapy and is a system of manipulating different areas of the body to relieve pain, relax, stimulate, and tone the body. The basic goal of massage is to help the body heal itself and to increase health and well-being.

Massage provides relief to people of all ages, from infants to seniors, and from all walks of life from the athlete to the home gardener or overstressed, overworked executive. When your muscles are overworked, waste products such as lactic acid can accumulate in the muscle causing soreness, stiffness and muscle spasm.

Massage can improve the body’s, circulation which increases blood flow, bringing fresh oxygen to body tissues. This can assist the elimination of waste products, speed healing after injury, and enhance recovery from disease.

Massage involves a variety of physical methods including stroking, pressing and kneading the body tissues. The primary tools of the therapist are the hands but they may also use their forearms, elbows or special machines. The use of oils, lotions, and powders may also be included to reduce friction on the skin.

CranioSacral Therapy

CranioSacral Therapy is a gentle hands-on method of evaluating and enhancing the function of a physiological body system called the craniosacral system - comprised of the membranes and cerebrospinal fluid that surrounds and protect the brain and spinal cord. It is a light touch fascial modality, which like massage is working with tissue, but with less pressure.  It works on helping the body reestablish balanced motion by locating restrictions, and using gentle subtle techniques, assisting the body to return itself to normal function.

The treatment results in a deep sense of balance and relaxation.

Because of its influence on the functioning of the nervous system this therapy can benefit the body in a number of ways - from reducing stress and enhancing overall health to alleviating  a wide range of specific medical conditions associated with pain and dysfunction inclusing: neck and back pain, headaches, tmj syndrome,

The light touch involved with the application of CranioSacral Therapy makes it safe and gentle approach for people of all ages, including pregnancy, babies and mums post birth.

How is CranioSacral Therapy performed?

A session takes place in a quiet setting. Clients remain fully clothed. The session is performed with the client reclining on a treatment table while the practitioner stands or sits, positioned at various times throughout the session at the clients's head, torso or feet. A typical session lasts for approximately one hour.
